As the Fourth of July approaches, and this past week fades. I have several thoughts swarming in the brain. Here’s one for now…
Did Michael Jackson’s death also kill the Iranian uprising?
Last week started with the Iranian people fighting and dying for their voices to be heard. Protesting in the streets. Using the internet and new technology to get their story out of the tightly controlled country. Reaching for international support, encouragement, and help….something.
But their problem was…a better story came along.
The press shuffled to MJ’s death like flies to… Nonstop coverage of ‘moon-walking’ snuffed out the cares of the Iranians, the Hondurans, the Korean missiles, as well as any other story of substance.
The spotlight of international attention swept from the people of Iran to the death of the dancer. And so, the brutal crackdown on the protesters happened under the cover of darkness. Their spotlight of media attention had been taken by a bigger story. Their fifteen was up…
I am sure many have already said this. And probably said it better.
But I cannot help but wonder what would happen if people paid attention to events that really shaped their lives. Events that shape their children’s future.
Do we really need coverage of MJ’s death and the ensuing drama that follows for 24 hours of nonstop coverage….? Then another 48 hours…72 hours… when does it stop..?
Not until the next, more important story of course…
But, what if we could focus on what is important – rather than allowing our attention to be bedazzled by the story of the moment….the sparkling white glove as it were this time.
