Michael Jackson killed the Iranians…?

July 3rd, 2009

As the Fourth of July approaches, and this past week fades. I have several thoughts swarming in the brain. Here’s one for now…

Did Michael Jackson’s death also kill the Iranian uprising?

Last week started with the Iranian people fighting and dying for their voices to be heard. Protesting in the streets. Using the internet and new technology to get their story out of the tightly controlled country. Reaching for international support, encouragement, and help….something.

But their problem was…a better story came along.

The press shuffled to MJ’s death like flies to… Nonstop coverage of ‘moon-walking’ snuffed out the cares of the Iranians, the Hondurans, the Korean missiles, as well as any other story of substance.

The spotlight of international attention swept from the people of Iran to the death of the dancer. And so, the brutal crackdown on the protesters happened under the cover of darkness. Their spotlight of media attention had been taken by a bigger story. Their fifteen was up…

I am sure many have already said this. And probably said it better.

But I cannot help but wonder what would happen if people paid attention to events that really shaped their lives. Events that shape their children’s future.

Do we really need coverage of MJ’s death and the ensuing drama that follows for 24 hours of nonstop coverage….? Then another 48 hours…72 hours… when does it stop..?

Not until the next, more important story of course…

But, what if we could focus on what is important – rather than allowing our attention to be bedazzled by the story of the moment….the sparkling white glove as it were this time.

Over the past several years, I have become disheartened that the country with some of the greatest minds had to settle for ‘leadership’ that was uninspiring and clearly out of touch with the wishes of the American people.

I became angry for feeling forced into a vote between the lesser of evils; however, I realized there were really no other viable options. I just didn’t see two men as real ‘options’.

The more I listened, the more I heard the rising tide of resentment and total lack of faith in our ‘elected’ officials. People all across America, continually frustrated with the lack of progress on the real issues facing our country.

By developing imagery and content that celebrates the greatness of our country, I hope to challenge the American citizen, as well as, those in power to be accountable to the ideals that made America great.
